RAAAF [Rietveld Architecture-Art-Affordances] is the new name of our studio. More than Rietveld Landscape did, this new name reflects the actual nature of our practice at the crossroads of architecture, art and science.

The studio started after Ronald won the Prix de Rome in 2006. Since our contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010 the majority of assignments have come from institutes in the art world, such as the Istanbul Art Biennale, Z33, Kunsthal, SKOR, and Centraal Museum. Thanks to a VIDI-grant awarded to Erik by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) we have also strengthened our ties with the sciences. The long-term research project in the field of the philosophy of cognitive science is titled ‘The Landscape of Affordances: Situating the Embodied Mind’.  It investigates how ‘affordances’, action possibilities offered by the environment, contribute to people’s behavior, cognition and lived experience.

RAAAF will continue to cut through professional fields and seemingly indestructible structures. We will continue to use a timeframe of decades and think at multiple scale levels.  We will continue to offer unorthodox perspectives and show novel horizons.
